Il you would like to measure distances within a certain area in order to achieve applications such as profiling, navigation, position measurement, the LZR®-U901, which is based on the LASER scanner technology, is the most appropriate solution.
This sensor allows you to measure distances within horizontal or vertical planes; the LASER works in up to 4 planes.

The LZR®-U901 is designed to provide  the user with the highest degree of flexibility. It communicates the raw measurement data for further calculation or control tasks via a RS485 bus system.

The sensor has a field of view of 96° and is able to cover a measurement range up to 10 m × 10 m (@ 2% remission factor).
Thanks to the LASER technology, this sensor does not request any additional illumination of the target object (compared to standard camera systems). Furthermore background or substrate has almost no effect on measurements.
