Beside safeguarding  exterior and PSD doors or comfort on interior doors, other applications can also be achieved based on radar and infrared sensors.
Generally, if motion has to be detected,radar sensors are the most adequate solution,whereas if presence has to be detected or if distance has to be measured,infrared is generally more appropriated.
