Capturing gait is useful for many applications, such as person, gender, or age identification. Gait analysis is also useful for medical purposes, since ambulation impairment is the frequent symptom of a broad range of diseases, including multiple sclerosis where quantitative evaluation of gait performances is a good indicator of disease activity.

The most common sensors used to capture gait suffer from significant drawbacks. The Belgian University of Liège, ULg, has therefore designed a new low-cost and nonintrusive system to capture gait. The system is able to track the feet on the horizontal plane in both the stance and the swing phases by combining measures of several range laser scanners LZR from BEA.

The LZR®-U901 is used for this purpose.
The LZR®-U901 is a LASER-based measurement device measuring distances on up to 4 planes. The LZR®-U901 can be installed to scan in any direction and is designed to provide the user with the highest degree of flexibility. It also communicates the raw measurement data through a standard RS485 bus for further calculation or control tasks.

BEA’s product the LZR-i180 has been awarded twice during the trade fair R+T 2012 in the categories industrial doors and energy efficiency.

Nowadays, energy savings and protection of the environment are crucial topics.

The experts formally state that energy loss is more important when the door is open. The calculations are simple: for a standard door of 4 m × 4 m, an air passage of 16 m² is created during each opening.
In order to solve this problem, BEA and Novoferm (TST and Tormatic) have developed a system that reduces energy loss by adapting the door opening height to the size of the approaching object.

	How does it work?

A laser scanner is mounted on the moving door wing of the industrial door and horizontally scans all objects in front of the door. During an opening cycle, the laser detects objects, vehicles and persons and enables the door controller to open the door only as high as necessary. The advantage of this system is clear: it allows reducing energy loss up to 50 %!

This represents a clear benefit for the users and the environment: a reduced ecological foot print, optimized heating or air conditioning costs and a greater comfort for the staff working in proximity of the doors by being less exposed to outside temperatures.

Nowadays, modern equipment such as automatically operated window systems is more and more in use in the building technology in order to optimize the temperature and ventilation flow. The aim is to decrease the use of air-conditioning systems and therefore reduce the overall carbon foot-print.

However, the use of such systems on the building facade will also increase the risk of injury for persons. This injury risk should be assessed from the very beginning of design and installation of the automatically operated window system on the building façade.

Therefore, suitable measures should be taken in order to make the daily use of such systems safe and reduce the risk of injury for persons to a minimum. Such safety measures can be laser scanner systems such as the LZR®-W400 able to cover very large areas. The LZR®-W400 Laser Scanner sensor is already in use today as a protection solution for automatically operated windows for example in schools where children have access to them. LZR®-W400 can monitor the access to the whole window facade and therefore reduce the risk of injury for vulnerable persons.

Works of art in museums and short-term exhibitions must be protected against theft and vandalism. However, current systems such as cameras or infrared barriers do not necessarily provide an optimum protection because their performance remains a trade-off between flexibility and detection reliability.

	LZR®-S600
The optimum 3-D solution for the protection of works of art
Designed in partnership with CODINE S.A

LZR®-S600 device monitors a complete plane which just can be adjusted with a secured remote control unit. As soon as a person or an object enters the monitored area and approaches close to the works of art, or even touches it, the LASER device is detecting it at once. The LASER is sending then an impulse to the alarm system to trigger the alarm signal.

LASER-based measurement systems such as the LZR®-S600 are chosen for their high flexibility and their great independence towards illumination sources -for example during short-term exhibitions-. The company CODINE (www.codine.be) is an expert in the sector of protection of objects and works of art in museums, short-term exhibitions and other high risk sites. CODINE has integrated the LZR® technology in their protection systems installed in several museums in the Paris region. The same system using the LZR® technology has been deployed to protect the works of art in the French Pavilion during the 2010 Universal Exhibition in Shanghaï.

LZR®-U9XX is a contactless optical sensor based on the time of flight technology and is part of the Laser Scanner product range.

The sensor measures the distance to several points by analyzing the time of flight of a laser beam scanning from one up to four spatial planes. The surface measured per plane can reach up to 10m × 10 m max. with a remission factor of 2%.

This particular version of LASER Scanner platform has been designed to provide higher flexibility to the customer. The LZR®-U9XX communicates the raw measurement data through the RS485 standard communication bus for further data treatments or dedicated control tasks. Profile analyzes as well as detection, automated vehicle guidance, objects and position measurement are some examples that can be mentioned among typical applications.

The French company CLEARSY (www.clearsy.com) developed the GAPS system with dedicated software. That system, including the LZR®-U9XX, is a fully automated system for easy access of people with disabilities. The system will be integrated in the future REGIOLIS trains, manufactured by ALSTOM for the French public transport company SNCF.

The main task of the GAPS system is to measure the distance between the quay and the train. The measured raw data and the gap filler deployment authorization will be transmitted to the Gap Filler system. The Gap filler is a mobile platform filling the gap between the train and the quay enabling people with disabilities to safely access or leave the train.

The GAPS system uses several LZR®-U9XX devices that continuously scan the edge of the quay. The measured data will validate whether the quay is compatible or not with the Gap Filler. The data is than transmitted through CAN bus to the external control unit to enable the GAPS SYSTEM to adjust the gap filler deployment. For more information regarding the GAPS system please refer to www.clearsy.com/php/projet-regiolis-gaps-fr.php

The GAPS system will be visible on the CLEARSY booth no. 1/231 during the International Railway Exhibition SIFER that takes place in Lille (France) from 5th until 7th April 2011. CLEARSY will exhibit the autonomous system ULTRAGAPS equipped with LZR®-U9XX devices.

The Stadler GTW train platforms equipped with LZR®-RS300

For the first time, our LZR®-RS300 will equip a complete train platform, the Stadler GTW , and will be installed on all exterior doors. Aiming at enhancing the door user’s safety, the sensor will ensure a permanent surveillance of the door area and prevent the door from closing if people are still standing in the threshold. The LZR®-RS300 allows reaching the highest safety level on external train doors– in combination with light grids –.

The LZR®-RS300 is a contactless optical sensor belonging to the laser scanner family and based on the Time of Flight technology. This sensor measures the distance to several points by analyzing the time of flight of a laser beam scanning one or several spatial planes. Every detection plane is continuous and the system can monitor the predefined detection field to the nearest cm. The detection area of each plane can be as large as 5mx5m and be defined individually. Therefore, the LZR®-RS300 fits on single leaf doors, double leaf-doors, flat doors and and curved doors.

Objects down to 5cm can be detected everywhere within the detection area. Compared to light beams or light grids, the LZR®-RS300 is able to monitor the complete door threshold area and allows to reach a higher safety level. Children, blind persons or persons with disabilities can feel safer with such a solution. Installing this sensor is also very user-friendly thanks to dedicated features like three visible LEDs, which can be activated in order to align the sensor detection field, or the option to adapt the tilt and the rotation angle. Furthermore, an implemented “teach-In” function allows the sensor to learn its environment and define its detection area automatically.
The LZR®-RS300 complies with the standards EN50155 and is also ready for the TS45545.

The first train vehicles, on which the LZR®-RS300 is installed, should be delivered in October 2010.
Following projects are concerned:

 Graz-Köflacher Railway (GKB), Graz
The Graz-Köflacher Railway and Bus Operation GmbH (GKB) has delivered 13 new diesel-powered articulated railcars of the GTW 2/8 type for operation on the Graz-Köflach and Graz-Wies-Eibiswald routes in the south-west Steiermark (Styria).
